If You Don't Know Where You Are Going

Jan 6 / Chris Falson
I know I go on and on about it… but if you write songs without an audience in mind, don’t expect to hit any specific market bulls-eyes.

Not having an audience in mind is also a metaphor for life. This latest song of mine, ANY ROAD is aimed at core fans of Americana music which means that it is targeting a segment of my fan base. Some of my fans won’t ‘love it’ but that’s OK… and because I am in the Root’s Gospel-Americana genres, my hope is to win others who love those music genres.

Inspiration

You can target an audience with lyrics too. In this song the lyrical theme is: 'If you don’t know where you are going, any road will lead you there.’

I am, if nothing else, an avid reader: for pleasure, solace, wisdom and understanding and of course, inspiration for new songs.

I got the idea for this song (Any Road) from a passage in Lewis Carroll’s ‘Alice in Wonderland’

An Excerpt

Alice is talking to the cat:

“Would you tell me, please, which way I ought to go from here?”

“That depends a good deal on where you want to get to,” said the Cat.

“I don’t much care where–” said Alice.

“Then it doesn’t matter which way you go,” said the Cat.

“–so long as I get SOMEWHERE,” Alice added as an explanation.

“Oh, you’re sure to do that,” said the Cat, “if you only walk long enough.”

In other words: If you don’t know where you’re going, any road will lead you there.

In 2026 there is a path with your name on it. I hope you find it.

Cheers,

Chris
