WHERE ARE YOU AIMING YOUR CREATIVITY?

If I were to shoot an arrow into the air, no matter where it landed, I could say,
“That’s just where I was aiming!”

To me, this is how most songwriters write songs. Inspiration arrives, and they launch into creative mode without first considering who they’re writing for.

🎶 Why Songwriters Get Stuck

Without an audience in mind, songwriters often end up second-guessing everything:
 • The lyric
 • The melody
 • The chord structure
 • The style
 • The genre
 • Even the form of the song

How Do I Know?

Because I coach and collaborate with songwriters all the time. And most often, when they bring me their ideas, the songs lack direction.

Here are the common problems I see:
 • The song lacks focus
 • There’s either no theme or too many themes
 • The purpose of the song is unclear
 • The structure doesn’t fit the lyric’s meter
 • The structure doesn’t match the intended genre or style

🎻 Imagine Creating Something Without a Recipient

Think of a manufacturer designing a new product without knowing whether anyone wants it.
They might create a beautiful object… that no one buys.

Or a politician preparing a speech without any understanding of the audience’s beliefs, needs, or desires.
What would they even say?
What could they promise?

If I was invited to teach at a conference and I had no information on the types of people attending: their ages, their beliefs, their skill levels, their interests… are they musicians or singers or home studio producers or worship leaders- what if they are none of the above?

How would I prepare my lesson without understanding who they were or what they needed?

The same problem faces the songwriter. Writing a song without an audience in mind, not knowing their likes, wants or needs, their musical preferences or what’s happening in their lives is like aiming an arrow in the air and hoping for the best.
